Diagnosis & Treatments for
Kidney Stones
OVERVIEW
Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and acid salts that form inside the kidneys. Kidney stones, or renal calculi, are solid masses made of crystals. Kidney stones usually originate in your kidneys. However, they can develop anywhere along your urinary tract, which consists of these parts:
- kidneys
- ureters
- bladder
- urethra
Kidney stones are one of the most painful medical conditions. The causes of kidney stones vary according to the type of stone.

CAUSES
Kidney stones often have no definite, single cause, although several factors may increase your risk.
Diet, excess body weight, some medical conditions, and certain supplements and medications are among the many causes of kidney stones. Often, stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together.
SYMPTOMS
Usually will not cause symptoms until it moves around within your kidney or passes into your ureters — the tubes connecting the kidneys and the bladder. If it becomes lodged in the ureters, it may block the flow of urine and cause the kidney to swell and the ureter to spasm, which can be very painful. Symptoms include:
- Severe pain in the side and back, below the ribs
- Pain that moves to the lower abdomen and groin
- Pain that comes in waves and fluctuates in intensity
- Pain or burning sensation while urinating
Other signs and symptoms may include:
- Red or brown urine
- A persistent need to urinate, urinating more often than usual or urinating in small amounts
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever and chills if an infection is present
Pain caused by a kidney stone may change — for instance, shifting to a different location or increasing in intensity — as the stone moves through your urinary tract.
DIAGNOSIS FOR KIDNEY STONES
Diagnosis of kidney stones requires a complete health history assessment and a physical exam. If your doctor suspects that you have a kidney stone, you may have diagnostic tests and procedures, such as:
- Blood testing. Blood tests may reveal too much calcium or uric acid in blood as well it will give an idea regarding kidney functions.
- Imaging
- Abdominal X-ray
- Ultrasound (sonography)
- Computerized tomography (CT)
KIDNEY STONES TREATMENT IN AHMEDABAD
Management of kidney stone depends upon the size, exact location, consistency of stone; and the condition of patient. It ranges from medicinal therapy to surgery. Stone size is the utmost crucial factor in determining the modality.
Surgery is done to prevent the kidney function from deteriorating and prevent the incidence of disease.
Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) for Kidney Stone
Ureterorenoscopy using flexible ureteroscope is called Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS). It can be easily used for stones anywhere in the tract. It is especially suited for patients where ESWL cannot be performed (bleeding disorders; obesity) or has failed. With these flexible scopes, virtually any area of the upper collecting system can be visualized by the surgeon.
Its advantages include no incision on the body, short hospital stay & early recovery.
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) for kidney stone
Lithotripsy is extracorporeal shock waves therapy, which are the sound waves, used for breaking down the stones, making into smaller fragments, which eventually pass into the bladder. Stone size up to 1 to 1.5 cm can be treated by this modality. It is safe treatment for stone including in children as small as 1 year of age.
Percutaneous Nephrostolithotomy (PCNL) Procedure for Kidney Stone
This method involves the removal of a stone through a tiny puncture in the concerned person’s back. These methods are recommended when the stone is too big or multiple in the kidney where other methods are not effective.
Mini PNL, Superperc
These are the miniaturisation of PCNL where smaller tract dilatation is done to remove the stone, advantages are less post-operative pain, bleeding and early recovery with better patient friendly.
